The Peanut Gallery: NYX Mega Shine Lip Gloss

Once upon a time when craze over the MAC Viva Glam Gaga Lipglass was in full swing I was looking for a nude lip gloss but couldn't convince myself to drop $14.50 on it. Then Drea recommended NYX Mega Shine Lip Gloss in Perfect to me. I journeyed to the not so far away land of Ulta to discover that I could purchase 1 and get 1 half off thanks to a magical sale and I settled on the stunning Copper Penny.

  • Colors: The color of these lip glosses, in my experience is pretty nice, and they are pretty pigmented. I really like the color of the ones I have especially Copper Penny.

Naked lips

Perfect

  • Opacity: Obviously they are a gloss so its not going to be super mega coverage but they definitely have a good amount of color to them.
  • Longevity: Unfortunately this gloss doesn't stay on lips very well and will need to be reapplied about every hour or so, even with out much coming in contact with your lips (ie cups, etc).
  • Shimmer: They both have a very nice shimmer to them. The shimmer in Copper Penny reminds me of almost like a metallic in that the glitter is super super fine and is similar in color to the gloss so its an all over shimmer evenly through out if that makes sense. The glitter in Perfect contrasts a tiny bit more with the gloss so it is a little more noticeable.
  • Feel: These lip glosses are not super sticky, which is what some people prefer (but is also why they have to be re-applied more frequently)
  • Smell: Both of the glosses I have have a bit of a fruity smell to them, the smell may vary by shade but both I have smell about the same. I personally find it to be a pleasant smell however I know some people really do not like the smell. Out of the people I have talked to it seems to be split about 50/50.
  • Packaging and applicator
    • The packaging is a normal rectangular tube, nothing super fancy although there is a bow atop the cap that adds a little something to it and the shade is listed on the side with the ingredients rather than on the bottom.
    •  As for the applicator it works well but for some reason it makes my lips itch! It's so weird, it only makes them itch while I'm applying the lip gloss so it's no big deal, and as i have used them more they don't make my lips itch as much so either my lips got used to it or they got more broken in. Either way really no big deal, just an odd sensation :P

  • Price: Full price is $5.50 but I snagged mine buy one get one 50% off at Ulta. You can also order NYX products on ebay often two for the price of one. I think $5.50 is an ok price for these, however due to the fact that they have to be reapplied so often so you go through it faster I would probably wait until they were buy one get one 50% off again or purchase them through ebay if I were to buy them again.
  • Other considerations: If you are looking at a certain color I highly recommend that you look online for actual swatches versus looking at the ones provided on the NYX website which I find to be rather inaccurate. For demonstrative purposes here are screen clips taken from the NYX website for Copper Penny and Perfect, if you compare these to the swatches I've added you will see that they are rather different.

Overall: While it would be nice if they lasted a bit longer I like them, they are a good inexpensive gloss. I would buy them again (preferably on sale) and I would recommend them to anyone looking for an inexpensive but pretty lip gloss.
Rating: 3.5/5
