Comments From the Peanut Gallery: Vermont's Original Bag Balm

My mom's birthday was last week and one of the things I gave her was Vermont's Original Bag Balm. My mom struggles with severe, painful, dry skin especially on her knees, elbows, and feet. She has tried many different lotions etc. some of which helped but still didn't make a huge difference. I had heard of Bag Balm before and when I stumbled across it at Walgreen's I decided to get it for her and she could try it out and see if it helped.

What is bag balm? Bag balm was originally developed by farmers for use on cows' udders when the udders became chapped, dry, irritated, etc. However bag balm is also supposed to work well on humans too.

The Breakdown
The Good
  • IT WORKS! My mom has really been impressed with how well this stuff works, her skin looks so much better and it isn't painful and itchy like it usually is. Just one or two uses and it had improved greatly. Unfortunately I did not take before pictures so I can't provide before and after pictures. I can say that this stuff works better than anything else she has tried
  • Because it is a thick ointment containing lanolin rather than a lotion it stays put until it is absorbed.
  • It is affordable. It runs about $8 - $9 bucks for a 10 ounce tin which should last you quite a while (listed for $8.29 on Walgreens.com)
  • Bonus! my mom's kitchen is decorated in a country theme and when the tin is empty it will be a great addition to the decorations in her kitchen :)

The Bad
  • It's not necessarily the prettiest and it isn't in a fancy yummy scent, however the natural lanolin scent is not unpleasant.
  • It's thick and some may not like the feel. Also, it takes a bit to soak in fully (maybe 10-15 minutes) this think ointment is not always ideal; for example I can't use it on my hands before i leave in the morning because I don't want to drive with my hands covered in bag balm and get it all over my steering wheel, it may make gripping the wheel a little tricky lol.
what's inside, this one is my mom's and has been used for about a week, thus the dent in it

the top of the tin :)
